XIM Matrix Not Connecting to Xbox? 8 Fixes That Work

Plugged in your XIM Matrix and your Xbox just isn't picking it up? This is one of the most common setup problems, and it's almost always caused by the connection order, the cable, or the controller used for authentication. Work through the fixes below in order. Most people are back in a match by step 3.

These steps follow XIM's official troubleshooting guide for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

Before you start: update the firmware

Check for an XIM Matrix firmware update first. Many connection problems disappear on the latest firmware. Our step-by-step XIM Matrix firmware guide walks you through it in a few minutes.

1. Use the correct connection order

The order you plug things in matters. Power off your Xbox controller and connect it to Port 3 on the XIM Matrix first, then connect the XIM Matrix to the Xbox. The controller in Port 3 is used to authenticate with the console.

2. Clear the controller's wireless pairings

Disconnect the controller from the XIM Matrix. Power the controller on and hold its pairing button until it rumbles twice (this can take up to 10 seconds). Make sure the controller is off, then reconnect it to Port 3 and try again.

3. Update the controller directly on the Xbox

Controller firmware should be updated through the Xbox dashboard with the controller plugged straight into the console, not through the XIM Matrix. Once it's updated, move it back to Port 3.

4. Swap the USB cable

A faulty cable is a very common cause. Try a different one, and make sure it's a data cable. Many cheap USB cables are power-only charging cables, and those will never connect.

5. Hard reboot the Xbox

Hold the Xbox power button until the console shuts off (up to 10 seconds), then unplug its power cable for 2 minutes before turning it back on. A normal restart isn't enough.

6. Remove the controller batteries

If your controller has removable batteries, take them out and try again.

7. Try a different controller

If nothing works, test with another controller. This rules out a faulty USB port on the original.

8. Check third-party controllers

Only officially licensed wired third-party Xbox controllers are supported. That licensed controller must be the only wired Xbox controller connected, and it should be in Port 3. You can't connect multiple wired Xbox controllers at the same time.

Bonus: XIM won't turn off with the Xbox?

If the XIM Matrix stays on, or turns back on, after you shut down the Xbox, set your Xbox power option to Sleep instead of Power Off.

What do the XIM Matrix lights mean?

If your XIM is blinking a color you don't recognize, especially repeated yellow (lost contact with the authentication controller), check our guide to XIM Matrix lights and what every color means.
