Custom XIM Matrix Config vs Preset: Which One Do You Need?

Short answer: start with a preset if you are happy to set up and adjust a config yourself. Choose a custom config if you want it built around your settings and tuned with you on a call.

What a preset XIM Matrix config is

A preset is a config someone else built that you load and adjust. You can find community configs on XIM Config Cloud, or buy a ready-made pack from a config maker.

A preset still needs some setup. XIM says shared configs can have their own requirements, such as game settings or a firmware version, so read the creator's notes first. If you use a mouse, you also need to enter its DPI into the config.

What a custom XIM Matrix config is

A custom config starts with your setup instead of someone else's. You share your in-game settings and playstyle, the config is built around them, and it can then be tested and adjusted in real matches.

Why your in-game settings matter

XIM Matrix has to be synchronized with your game's aim settings for accurate aim. For controller-output configs, XIM's guide lists three methods:

  • Standard: set in-game sensitivity to maximum, follow XIM's required aim settings, and leave other aim settings at default. Your aiming behavior is then set in the config.
  • Custom: copy your game's hip and ADS sensitivity, per-scope sensitivity and field of view into the config.
  • Manual: an advanced calibration option. XIM discourages it for controller-output configs because the results may not be accurate.

If a config's settings do not match your game, aim can feel wrong even when the config itself is good. Check this first before you replace it.

Which one should you choose?

What to prepare before a custom config

  • Your platform and the games you want configs for
  • Your input devices, plus your mouse DPI if you use a mouse
  • Your hip and ADS sensitivity, per-scope sensitivity and field of view
  • The weapons and loadouts you use most
  • What feels wrong with your aim or recoil now

Publishers treat adapters differently, so check the rules of the games you play before you use any config.
